Retirement Party

This is an illustration that I did for a retirement party. It's going on mugs and mousepads.

Penciling on the boards

Here are some of the pages. Only thirty something more to go. Whew!

Working

I'm finished with the sketching phase and beginning to work on actually pencilling in the art. It seemed like I cut a million boards the other weekend. I've finished three pages now, and I'll begin to paint after I get all of them drawn. The format changed a little bit from what I originally had sketched, so I've had to re-work a few designs as I go along. Here are a few shots of the board cutting.

Beach Driving and Ceremony Officiating

After officiating what may have been my shortest ceremony yet (just under a minute), we went geo-caching on the beach. We came up short. The beaches on the Oregon coast have a lot of logs, rocks, trees, and brush. It makes finding items very difficult. I was honored to be asked to officiate our friends Tara and Brian's wedding. The sun actually came out briefly for photos. It's rainy again today, so I want to hang my new vintage bicycle prints in my office and do some more work on the book. I will post photos soon of the progress.

I'm hoping to get a little disc golf in today, but I think the ground will be just too wet.

Good weekend

After lots and lots of traveling in May, (east coast, midwest, across the west), we have finally been home for a couple of weeks. I've decided that I really enjoy disc golf. It's definitely not as easy as it looks. If I don't lose it in the trees, I am happy. I've put off working on the book for a month or so, it's time I get back to business. Look for more postings soon. I'll try and photograph my process and take you through step by step. For now, good night!

Sketch 12

I'll start painting the full sizes soon. I like to have detailed sketches, so that I have a good idea of where I want everything to be placed. I'm sure that they will continue to change, but this gives me a good idea of where I want to go with it. The next question is, "What medium do I want to use?" I'll know more when I start. As I work, I'll try to photograph and post as I go.

Bulldogs

This is a mixed-media painting that I completed for my brother, who has two English Bulldogs. It measures about 18 x 22".

Sketch 8

Hello?

My friend Ian posted the Lionel Ritchie video for "Hello?" a few weeks ago. At the time, he had a pretty long beard. I made a sculpture like the one in the video, only with playdough (and of Ian, not Lionel Ritchie).

Ape sketch revision

I wanted to rework the position (and look) of the ape drawing. I wasn't very happy with the initial design of the original art. I am much happier with the size and positioning of drawing number three. The character is the dominant feature on the page, yet there is still room for the verbiage. I'm sure I will rework a couple more before committing to the final page.

I am also working on a good drawing of "hops" for a different project. I would grow it in the backyard, but I hear that it is poisonous to dogs.

Lots happening

I will have a couple of new sketches posted this week. I have a couple of new projects to work on as well as a new story that I need to finish writing. Summer is coming around, so I plan to go out (as soon as the rain stops) and draw at the nature parks in the area. There are several areas with fantastic views of the mountains, and frankly, I could use the outdoor landscape practice. It's been a while.

Sketch 7

I think I'm going to rework the bottom image, but I thought i would post to show the progress.

Traveling

I took a trip a couple of months ago and managed to make a few sketches of different people and places. I find that drawing things helps me to remember where I have been better than a photo ever could. I think it is because I spend more time looking.

I was getting ready to draw a table of people when one lady reached down to grab her luggage. I wanted to see how fast I could capture it. Fortunately she spent a few seconds getting everything together, which was enough time for me to get this drawing finished. As I was drawing, the television reporter commented that it was statistically the most dangerous driving day in California, so I noted it. I didn't drive that day.

Thumbnail Sketches

I've done several pages of thumbnail sketches for my new book that I will try and post within the next couple of days. I've also done a couple of final sketches for the first two pages. I'm debating on what medium to color the art. It will probably be guache or acrylic on cold press illustration board. I've got another story in mind that I thought of while riding my bicycle the other morning. It's been cloudy and cool this last month, which I love as far as home projects go. I'm not tempted the go and hike in the park up the road instead of being productive when it is soggy outside.

The Timbers have seven minutes to score two goals. They better get going!

WORK

I only have a few copies of WORK (Dirty Hand Media 2003) that I put together with Doug Kubert left in storage. It features Doug Kubert, Josh Cotter, Gina Kaufmann,  and more. There is a copy currently in the Kansas City Public Library. I am also talking to the Washington County Public Library system about giving them a few copies as well. I hope to put together a more personal collection of stories in the next few months.
